The quarterback gets the play from the sideline and communicates the play along with the snap count to his teammates. The QB then approaches the line of scrimmage and positions himself behind center while surveying the field. When he surveys the field he collects snapshots of information about the contour of the defensive alignment and makes certain his teammates are aligned correctly. He looks for quick indicators to make his best pre-snap assessment of what the defense is playing. At the snap he then either keys an area or a specific defender to execute his pass or run responsibility.
