Thoughts on Leadership by Dick Vermeil

Doug Brady • Mar 05, 2024

Coach Brady's longtime mentor Ed Carberry recently shared the following leadership qualities with he and others.

1. LIKE PEOPLE

· People must know you like them. Show your emotion. It is a Psychological Paycheck for the players.

· A human mind is like a parachute, they only work when they are open.

2. BE A GOOD EXAMPLE

· You cannot expect your staff and team to be who you are if you aren’t true to yourself.

· Recognize that competition is our ally.

· “When a man dies if he can pass on enthusiasm to his family he has given them what they need.” Thomas Edison

3. ATMOSPHERE – DEVELOP AN ATMOSPHERE

· Recognition

· Appreciation

· Praise

· Develop self esteem in your players. Self esteem is delicate… treat all players as All Conference players! No Super Stars

· Handle Adversity

· Recognize small wins… incremental successes compound!

· An example would be to make a highlight tape after a big loss… show only the highlights to emphasize where you are progressing

4. DEFINE / DELAGATE / LEAD IT IMPOWERS PEOPLE TO GROW

· Win in spite of the existing culture, fight the battles you can win.

· “The main thing will always be the main thing.”

· “The Lombardi Trophy weighs only 7 ½ lbs but it takes an entire team to lift it.”

· “Delegation does not abdicate your responsibility.”

· “Don’t’ be afraid to listen.”

· “The road to the Super Bowl is always under construction.” – John Ralston

 5. LEAD WITH HIGH ENERGY

· Incremental success can’t always be seen. Keep working.

· “When in a leadership role you are never energy neutral, you are either sapping or adding.”

· “When the bitching stops, you got ‘em.”

· “Hard work is always relative to what you are used to.”

· “There is only one endeavor that you can start on top and that’s digging a hole.”

6. BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AS YOU GO THROUGH A WORKING PROCESS

· Celebrate staff Birthdays

· “There is only one thing more infectious than a good attitude… that is a bad attitude.”

· “There is no substitute for PASSION.”

· By building relationships the nay sayers have less credibility

· “If what you are about to do has nothing to do with winning and losing, don’t do it.” George Allen

· “People play progressively better as they are treated progressively better.”

7. BE SINCERE – IT TAKES TIME TO BUILD CREDABILITY…

VERY LITTLE TIME TO LOSE IT

· “Take the blame, give away the credit.”

· “Life’s most precious moments are a small percentage of our life time… appreciate them.”

The quarterback gets the play from the sideline and communicates the play along with the snap count to his teammates. The QB then approaches the line of scrimmage and positions himself behind center while surveying the field. When he surveys the field he collects snapshots of information about the contour of the defensive alignment and makes certain his teammates are aligned correctly. He looks for quick indicators to make his best pre-snap assessment of what the defense is playing. At the snap he then either keys an area or a specific defender to execute his pass or run responsibility. This entire process can fill up the pages of an entire book or it can be synthesized to its simplest form such as throw to open grass or read 1,2 to 3.
