How to Choose a Quarterback Coach

Doug Brady • Feb 26, 2024

The quarterback gets the play from the sideline and communicates the play along with the snap count to his teammates. The QB then approaches the line of scrimmage and positions himself behind center while surveying the field. When he surveys the field he collects snapshots of information about the contour of the defensive alignment and makes certain his teammates are aligned correctly. He looks for quick indicators to make his best pre-snap assessment of what the defense is playing. At the snap he then either keys an area or a specific defender to execute his pass or run responsibility. This entire process can fill up the pages of an entire book or it can be synthesized to its simplest form such as throw to open grass or read 1,2 to 3.

Choosing a full-time quarterback mentor is an important decision for you, your son, or your daughter if the desire is to play this very fulfilling and humbling position. The beginning paragraph is intended to give the reader a glimpse of what a Quarterback is responsible for in every play. It is not easy to diagnose.

The first thing one should do when they embark on this journey is to assess the young person's desire to put extra time into this position. Putting forth the effort to build a lower body foundation as a passer is essential. Before a football is even picked up a Quarterback must understand how their feet should be sequenced as a passer.

The second thing that should be done is to determine what type of monthly budget the family is willing to invest in the endeavor. If a family cannot take on this burden ask the coach what options are available. Full-time coaches must find enough clients to make a living but they also want to help young people.

The third thing that someone should do is conduct research on the coaches available in their area. There are a handful of very qualified Quarterback coaches across the country. Not every style is the same. Ask some questions to discern which coach is the right fit for your child or yourself.

Once the coach is hired ask him to give you feedback in consistent intervals. “Your son is doing great” can give you a warm and fuzzy feeling but ask for a periodical performance appraisal. Ask what the coach believes is the athlete's strength. Ask what their weaknesses are. Ask the coach what the attributes are for a successful quarterback. Follow up with what your son or daughter needs to do to attain those attributes.
